DIWA GAME: Bullet Hell Got a Filipino Heartbeat, and It’s Not Sorry
Philippine indie devs have been cooking quietly. Then Proyekto DiWa shows up. Search “DIWA GAME” and that’s what you’ll hit — a 2D bullet-hell from Regular Irregular Studios, with Mikaela Guce @CheesoMiya at the helm. It’s pop idols. It’s magical girls. It’s aswang and diwata crashing your concert. Still in beta on itch.io, but already one of the boldest uses of Filipino folklore I’ve seen in a game. Not decoration. Ammunition.
The Setup: Your Encore Just Summoned Demons
You play as twins. Performers. Their on-stage energy? It’s not normal. One concert goes wrong, creatures slip through, and suddenly their powers are awake. Enter Tita Mane and a shady government offer: become magical-idol agents. Fight the monsters. Keep the fans screaming for the right reasons. One show at a time.
Two things click immediately.
One, it rips the bullet-hell formula out of space ships and European witches and drops it into something messier: bayanihan, showbiz politics, and myths you heard from your lola. A manananggal boss fight hits different when it’s interrupting your lightstick choreography.
Two, the story actually matters to the gameplay. You’re dodging patterns, sure. But you’re also protecting crowds, managing your image, figuring out what it costs to use old power in a new world. The stakes aren’t abstract.
How You Play: Switch, Sweat, Survive
Built in Unity. Top-down. Single-player. But call it a Touhou clone and you’re missing the point.
null
The devs say combat is “overloaded.” Yeah. You’re switching twins while screen-clears are on cooldown, reading attack patterns based on folk creatures that don’t move like standard shmup enemies. Reflexes get you halfway. The rest is planning. And if you tank your idol rep in the minigames, good luck.
Art & Sound: Magical Girl, But Make It Textile
First glance: it’s sparkly. Stage lights, transformation sequences, outfits that belong on a real OPM group. Look again. The UI has anito marks. Costumes pull from weaving patterns. Bosses aren’t “spooky blob #3” — they’re regional. Specific. You can tell someone on the team grew up with these stories.
Credits back that up: dedicated Lead Artist for characters, 2D Environment/Background Artist, UI Artist. This isn’t one artist juggling everything.
Sound is still TBA in the beta notes. But an idol game with no original tracks? Doubt it. Filipino composers like Diwa de Leon have been blending kulintang, kundiman, and synths across film and games for years. If Proyekto DiWa goes that route — folk instrumentation under J-pop structure — it’ll be lethal.
The Crew: Classic Indie, Everyone Has Three Jobs
Regular Irregular Studios is small but scrappy:
Mikaela Guce @CheesoMiya – Producer, 2D Artist
M. V @notpwub – Lead Programmer, QA
M. P. @baguettito – Lead Artist (Characters)
A. T. @gie13 – Lead Designer
Nicolo Pacannuayan @mpnicolo – Scrum Master, Programmer, QA
Coders do QA. Artists produce. That overlap is why it feels cohesive. The idol mechanics aren’t stapled onto the bullet patterns. They grew together.
“DIWA GAME” Isn’t Diwali or a Board Game
Search the term and you’ll wade through Diwali trivia apps, fireworks sims, a resource game called Dewan, even Diwar Climb.
Proyekto DiWa is the only one using “DiWa” as a nod to diwata — nature spirits. In Tagalog, “diwa” means spirit, essence, your core. So every dodge is metaphor. Hold your spirit together while the world — literal monsters, cultural noise, fame — tries to shred it. The spelling isn’t random. It’s the thesis.
Why You Should Pay Attention
Myth with teeth. Creatures aren’t reskins. Their lore dictates how they attack. Knowing the myth changes how you fight.
The mashup works. Idol sim + bullet hell sounds like a disaster. Here, minigames are survival tools. Systems feed each other.
It’s alive. itch.io page updated 2 days ago. Credits are full of QA/programmer hybrids. They’re tuning, not abandoning.
Proof of concept. Unity. Filipino team. No AAA safety net. If this hits Steam, it could do for PH indies what Coffee Talk did for Indonesia.
What’s Not There Yet
It’s beta. Four levels. Six items. Two weapons. That’s your whole sandbox. No endgame loop, no co-op — which is criminal, because twin-switch is basically couch co-op bait. No console announcement.
Give it more creatures from other regions, Tagalog VO, maybe an OPM collab, and Proyekto DiWa becomes the blueprint for Southeast Asian “mythpunk.”
Real Talk: It’s a Statement
Proyekto DiWa doesn’t ask permission to be Filipino. It doesn’t sand down edges to be “accessible.” It takes your culture, plugs it into a bullet-hell, and tells you to perform while the world burns. Dodge. Switch. Shine.
If you’re sick of every game boss being Zeus or Odin, here’s your antidote. Play the beta. it. Make noise.
“DIWA GAME” isn’t about keeping tradition on a shelf. It’s about giving it a weapon and a stage.
